Production & Sustainable Living

Learn to craft unique handmade goods from artists in the field. Starting with basic skill building, you will learn multi-step processes, working towards more independence in craftsmanship. You will be actively involved in all aspects of production, marketing, and distribution. Some of the products are sold and shipped nationwide. Using what we have and creating things to support a more sustainable lifestyle: papers, candles, lanterns, fire starters from lint and egg cartons, and handwoven reusable bags.

Soap Making
In this class, participants create cold-processed soaps using natural ingredients such as organic oils. They read and follow recipes, measure and mix ingredients, and practice techniques for molding, curing, and finishing their soaps. Emphasis is placed on safety, precision, and hands-on skill development, while fostering creativity and confidence in making natural products.

Candle Making
In this class, participants learn to make candles using natural ingredients such as organic beeswax. They practice shaping, coloring, and scenting techniques, while measuring and mixing materials safely. The class encourages hands-on craftsmanship, attention to detail, and creative expression.

Apothecary
In this class, participants get familiar with local herbs and learn to make herbal remedies. They harvest herbs from nature and gardens they help cultivate, read and follow recipes, measure and mix ingredients, and prepare teas, tinctures, salves, and other plant-based products. The class emphasizes safety, sustainability, and hands-on skill development.

Plant-Dyed Scarves
In this class, participants learn to dye scarves using natural plant-based colors. They experiment with patterns, shades, and textures, and practice techniques to create unique textile art. Emphasis is placed on creativity, careful handling of materials, and mindful use of natural resources.

Paper Making
In this class, participants learn to recycle paper and transform it into handmade creations. They incorporate natural elements such as flowers and leaves, explore color, texture, and patterns, and practice techniques for molding and finishing. The class highlights sustainability, creativity, and hands-on skills.

Packaging & Sales
In this class, participants prepare products made in other classes for sale at local stores. They practice packaging techniques that develop finger and hand dexterity, hand-eye coordination, focus, patience, and mindfulness. The class emphasizes careful presentation, pride in one’s work, and attention to detail.

Jewelry Making
In this class, participants learn to create handcrafted jewelry using natural stones and materials. They acquire design and assembly skills to produce bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and more. The class fosters creativity, fine motor skills, and confidence in making unique wearable art.

Upcycling

In class, students learn how to transform used sweaters, scrap wood, and other discarded materials into practical items and imaginative toys. From small boxes and decorative organizers to simple fences and children’s playthings, participants discover how everyday objects can be given new purpose.

Students will be taught a range of handy craft and handwork skills, including basic woodworking, stitching, felting, sanding, and simple construction techniques. Step-by-step guidance helps students design items that are safe, durable, and beautiful while strengthening creativity and problem-solving skills.

By the end of the class, each student will complete one or more functional creations and gain confidence in turning old materials into something new.
